Að stoppa and að hætta both translate as to stop, but they’re not quite the same kind of stopping. Let’s make them easi(er) to understand!
Rule of Thumb
The difference between að stoppa and að hætta is that að stoppa refers to either stopping physical motion (like a car at a red light) or stopping somebody else (like a friend from driving drunk), while að hætta refers to ceasing doing something yourself (like smoking).
Again in bullet format for the people just skimming this:
- Að stoppa is about stopping movement or stopping someone else.
- Að hætta is about quitting, stopping your own action or behavior.
Að stoppa
Að stoppa has two main uses:
- A physical stop
- Stopping someone or something else
If something literally stops moving, or if you stop someone from doing something, you use að stoppa.
- Bíllinn stoppaði við rauða ljósið og fór að spá í tilgang lífsins = The car stopped at the red light and started thinking about the meaning of life.
- Ég stoppaði hann áður en hann setti aðra hnetusmjörssamloku í faxvélina = I stopped him before he fed another peanut butter sandwich to the fax machine.
- Við stoppuðum í smá stund til að fá okkur kaffi og ákölluðum óvart koffínguð = We stopped for a bit to get coffee and accidentally summoned a caffeine deity.
Að hætta
Að hætta is about stopping an activity or habit. If you’re quitting a job, giving up a bad habit, or telling someone to knock it off, you use að hætta.
- Ég hætti að reykja í fyrra, en sígaretturnar senda mér enn póstkort = I quit smoking last year, but the cigarettes still send me postcards.
- Þú verður að hætta þessu… dúfurnar eru farnar að gruna eitthvað = You’ve gotta stop doing this… the pigeons are getting suspicious.
- Hann hætti að þjálfa íkorna í njósnum. Þeir voru að verða of góðir = He quit training squirrels for espionage They were getting too good.
Summary
Let’s wrap all this up with a neat little bow on it:
- If it’s about movement = að stoppa
- If it’s about stopping somebody else = að stoppa
- If it’s about quitting something = að hætta
Got it? Great. Now you can stop (að hætta) stressing about it =)
